Physical Object
An inanimate, three-dimensional object or substance. Note that digital representations of, or surrogates for, these objects should use Moving Image, Still Image, Text or one of the other types.
Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
This coat belonged to Ada May Gander, born in 1860, the youngest of seven children. Her father was a farmer and the family lived in Muskingum, Ohio. Ada trained to teach country school and she worked as a teacher, while living at home with her parents, for several years before quitting to keep house for her father after her mother's passing in 1886. Ada later moved to Zanesville, Ohio with her husband, Absolom Jones Jr. in 1899. It is noted that all the women in the Gander family sewed well, and preferred not to spend money on clothes, so it is likely that Ada constructed this garment herself.

She married Stanley Rogers in 1910 so it may have been purchased in preparation for her trousseau. The Wooltex brand of coat was sold exclusively by the H. Black Company in Cleveland, Ohio. H. Black had advertisements in Lady's Home Journal as well as newspapers throughout the country.

The cloak is a design from Max Pollatsek, a Columbus ladies tailor, who lived from 1870-1952. Pollatsek immigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1894 and first appears in the city directory in 1904. His wife, Johanna, was also a tailor but does not appear to work with Max in his business. In 1903 there are separate business and home addresses and by 1920 they own their home and Johanna is no longer working.
This coat was donated by Elizabeth Shedd Mykrantz and either her mother, Agnes Jeffrey Shedd, or mother-in-law, Alice McCormick Mykrantz, could have been the proud owner of this elaborate coat. Both were women whose husbands ran successful Columbus businesses. Frederick Shedd ran the E.E. Shedd Mercantile Company, founded by his father in 1852. It remained in business until 1938. Frank E. Mykrantz founded Mykrantz & Sons Drug Company.
