Physical Object
An inanimate, three-dimensional object or substance. Note that digital representations of, or surrogates for, these objects should use Moving Image, Still Image, Text or one of the other types.
Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
Ardis North wore this dress when she married Howard Lee Hamilton on February 11, 1928 in Columbus, Ohio.
Ardis was born in Nebraska in 1901 to Edgar and Pearl North, the youngest of three. Her father worked a variety of jobs including stock raiser, lumber merchant and town clerk, mostly in Nebraska. In 1920 they lived in Platte, Wyoming, where Ardis began work as a schoolteacher in a small rural schoolhouse. One of her duties was to light the stove each morning to heat the building. She worked to save money to attend Ohio State University, where she met her husband, Howard.
Howard was born in Illinois on May 30, 1903, one of John and Mary Hamilton’s five sons. His father was a successful banker and president of an insurance company. Howard graduated from OSU in 1926 and was extremely active on campus, taking part in Dip Day, (a dip into Mirror Lake celebrating the best of the rising junior class) in 1922, and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
Ardis was also active on campus as a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Industrial Management Club. She graduated with a degree in Commerce and Journalism in 1926, having had to take a break from her studies part way through her degree in order to return to work and save money for the remainder of her education. Following graduation, Howard worked for OSU as a secretary for the College of Arts and Sciences. They were very proud of their Alma Mater and worked at the university for many years.
Ardis was a very practical person and her descendants believe that when planning her wedding she chose a simple ceremony and possibly wore a nice dress that she already owned. Of particular note, however, is that the couple was married by William Oxley Thompson. Thompson had served as the President of The Ohio State University until 1925 and may have known the couple when they were students. Ardis and Howard were married for 40 years until Howard’s passing.

Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
Mary “Minnie” Eliza Knox wore this dress when she married Andrew Lawrence Kreutzer June 7, 1891 in Wisconsin. Her great-granddaughters, Mary Ruth Wilson and Sarah Stringer Wilson also wore it almost 100 years later for their respective marriages to Ron Holm on June 23, 1984 and Paul Johnston on September 6, 1986 in Minnesota.
Mary “Minnie” Knox was born July 14, 1864 in Wisconsin to Eliza Babcock and Samuel Goodhue Knox, the elder of two daughters. Minnie’s father was an entrepreneur who opened a country store and a gristmill before entering the lumber business. He was very successful, with mills in both Wisconsin and Minnesota, and his daughter was able to have a Chicago dressmaker, Josephine Chesley Hodges, make her wedding dress.
Andrew Kreutzer was born August 30, 1862 in Germantown, Wisconsin to Andrew and Caroline Kreutzer. At the age of 14, Andrew was apprenticed to a man who specialized in saddlery. He tired of this line of work, however, and left to teach school from 1884-1888. Andrew then enrolled in law school at the State University in Wausau and was admitted to the bar in 1890. He began his law firm soon thereafter and was prominent in state politics for many years. Andrew and Minnie had four children, two of whom lived to adulthood.
Mary Ruth Wilson and Sarah Stringer Wilson are great-granddaughters of Minnie Knox Kreutzer. They wore Minnie’s dress for their own wedding ceremonies before changing dresses for their receptions. Minnie’s dress did not undergo any alterations for either of the subsequent brides and remains in its original condition.

1891 Silk Wedding Dress
Description
An account of the resource
Off-white silk jacquard and crepe gown with long train, leg-of-mutton sleeves and a lace jabot peeking out from an open collar and repeated at the wrists. The dress recalls elaborate styles worn at 18th century European courts with its white jacquard outer robe covering a crepe underskirt. The outer dress fabric is similar to those used by Charles Frederick Worth, grandfather of Parisian haute couture

Margaret Carney was born April 30, 1949 in Iowa City, IA. She is a ceramics historian with a Ph.D. in Asian Art history, and a background in anthropology and archaeology. Margaret currently serves as curator of the Blair Museum of Lithophanes in Toledo. Her dress was purchased with the intention of being worn for her wedding to William Walker Jr. on May 1, 1999. The groom, however, got cold feet and the ceremony was cancelled three days prior to the event. This is not the end of the story, however. The couple did finally get married on December 28, 2002 in Lake Placid, New York. They wore matching moose sweaters and ice skates on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval in Lake Placid. They had to have permission from the Olympic authorities to get married there, by a justice of the peace, because no one had done it before. Margaret and William return to the ice in Lake Placid every year on their anniversary, wearing their matching moose sweaters, to recreate the event.

This dress was made from lace that was originally part of a wedding dress worn by Maude Tomlinson. Maude married Dr. William Sly Hoy on November 8, 1881. She was born in 1866 to William Henry Tomlinson and Ellen Barnett, one of six children but only one of three who survived into adulthood. Her father was a lawyer originally from Ohio but had moved to West Virginia to practice law. Dr. William Hoy was born in 1856 to Charles W. Hoy and Carrie C. Taylor. Dr. Hoy was the manager and chief surgeon of Hoy's Hospital in Wellston, OH, and acquired the nickname of "poor man's surgeon". He served as President of International Railway Surgeons as well as the President of the Ohio State Board of Education. Their granddaughter Harriet Hoy would reuse the lace from Maude's dress for her own wedding gown in 1951. Harriet Hoy was born May 14 1915 in Columbus, Ohio to Carl D. Hoy and Marjorie J. Tyler. Like his father, Carl was a surgeon who worked in a local Columbus, Ohio hospital. Harriet attended the Columbus School for Girls and Sarah Lawrence College where she studied music and dance education. On June 5, 1951 Harriet married Kirke P. Lincoln Jr. at the age of 36. Shortly thereafter. Harriet and Kirke moved to Cleveland. Kirke worked as an assistant cashier at Central Bank National Headquarters. Unfortunately, Harriet and Kirke divorced in 1963 after 11 years of marriage. Harriet continued to live in Shaker Heights near Cleveland until her passing in 1993.

Back neck opening to mid-back, fastens with hooks in collar, snaps in bodice. Long sleeves with puffed cap, narrow wrist pleated into vent that fastens with seven satin buttons/thread loops. Seam at natural waistline in front and dropped waistline in back with decorative peplum all around. Left side, metal zipper opening. Peplum fastens to the back with one snap over opening. Lace skirt gathered into waistline, long with short train. Satin underskirt gored and sewn plainly into waistline, is also long, but has a longer train than the lace skirt. The lace is a second remake of an 1880's dress.
