Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
Mary Lou Otto wore this dress on the occasion of her marriage to Lieutenant John H. Kime on December 7, 1941. Mary Lou was born March 10, 1918 in Nebraska to Elizabeth Butler and Roy Otto. Her father, Roy, worked as a laborer and a salesman in a hardware store. At the time of her marriage, Mary Lou was teaching home economics at Connellsville High School in Pennsylvania. She had graduated from that High School, and from the School of Home Economics at West Virginia University in Morgantown. John H. Kime was born June 11, 1916 in Moundsville, West Virginia. He graduated from the College of Mining Engineering of West Virginia University and had attended Greenbrier Military Academy. At the time of their marriage, John was already an officer in the Army and stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Their afternoon wedding took place at 2:00pm that infamous Sunday. It was only a half hour later that the major radio news networks interrupted regular programming, at 2:30pm Eastern Standard Time, to bring news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that launched the United States' involvement in WWII. Mary Lou's dress is no longer the blue it once was due to the properties of the acetate fiber and the dyes used at the time of its manufacture. We can still see the original color of the blue dress in the rayon hem tape, cotton stitching thread and side zipper tape, and the lining covering her shoulder pads.

This dress was first worn by Nelly Ann Ricci in 1943, and later by her daughter Ann Marie Salimbene in 1987 without alteration. Nelly Ann Ricci wore the dress upon her marriage to Lt. Col. Rocco Carmelo Salimbene on September 18, 1943 in Camp Shelby, Mississippi where he had recently been stationed. Nelly was born on October 12, 1919 in Columbus, Ohio to Mary and Tullio Ricci. Mary Ricci was born in Ohio, and Tullio had emigrated to the U.S. from Italy. While he originally worked as a car repairman for a railroad, he eventually opened his own men's tailoring business. Later in his career, he worked as a tailor at The Union department store in Columbus. Rocco Salimbene was born on February 22, 1913 in West Virginia to Mary La Neve and Joseph Salimbene, who had immigrated in 1903 and worked as a machinist. Rocco is an Ohio State University alumni who joined the Army in July, 1940 and was released in January, 1947. After the war Rocco was a mechanical engineer. It is unusual to find a dress with so much fabric in it during WWII. Order L-85, first announced in 1943, dictated that only one and three-fourths yards of fabric be used per dress. However, the wedding dress industry lobbied for an exemption, arguing that the white wedding tradition was one of the things the soldiers were fighting for and it was important to the overall morale of American citizens. Rocco and Nellie's daughter, Ann Marie Salimbene, would wear her mother's dress unaltered when she married on December 5, 1987. Her headpiece and veil, however, were something new

Elizabeth Green and Edwin Morgan were married on February 16, 1946. Edwin Morgan was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne division during WWII. His unit moved through Germany, setting fires in attempt to destroy all supplies and equipment. They found an airplane hangar on fire. Inside the hangar was a plane without a propeller. Edwin took two German parachutes from inside the burning hangar. The parachutes were imprinted with a manufacturer's label that included the Luftwaffe insignia, manufacture date, and other info. At the end of the war, family finances were limited, fabrics were short in supply and wedding gowns were expensive. John Parva, a tailor, made the dress out of the parachute for $18.00. He sewed the German label into the train of the dress.
