This dress belonged to Angela K. Westwater. Angela's father, William King Westwater, operated a family plumbing supplies company in Columbus, Ohio. Angela graduated from Smith College in 1964 and works as an art dealer in New York City. She co-founded a gallery named Sperone Westwater Fischer in 1975, when Italian art dealer Gian Enzo Sperone, Angela Westwater, and German art dealer Konrad Fischer opened a space at 142 Greene Street in SoHo, New York. (The gallery's name was changed to Sperone Westwater in 1982.)

Short black lace dress with ribbon straps and full taffeta ruffles hanging below thigh area. Dress has a fitted linear silhouette; full torso in black lace. Horizontal line across front and back top edges with eyelash effect from lace extending beyond edges. 1/2" wide black ribbon straps, non-adjustable. Double pointed darts at left and right front and back. Entire body or torso of garment lined in tan/flesh-colored silk chiffon which shadows under the black lace outer fabric. Center back zipper. Bottom 12" of dress in full black taffeta ruffle with smaller double edged ruffles at hemline and at seam where ruffle sewn to black lace. Black netting with horsehair braid edge sewn underneath ruffle.

V-neck sequined top with back and long sleeves in vertical sapphire blue sequins. Front in argyle design with green, brown and sapphire blue sequins in vertical rows forming pattern. Clear sequins in rows separate argyle pattern diamond shapes. Clear sequins outline front and back. Banded (2.5" wide) at hem in blue sequins with rows of clear sequins spaced 1" apart vertically on band. Top is blouson style. Vent at left hem with three hooks and eyes for closure. Entire top lined with blue georgette.
Crepe back satin sapphire blue wrap floor length skirt with curved overlap at front. Sheath silhouette skirt attached to sewn on waistband that secures with two large hooks and eyes. Skirt softly gathered to waistband but lies flat across center front.

This dress belonged to Dorothy Bell Whiley Peters. Dorothy was born in Lancaster, Ohio in 1891. Her father, Charles Bell Whiley, worked as lawyer in Lancaster. Dorothy married Philip Rising Peters in 1914. While Philip would pass away in 1954, Dorothy would live to be 100 years old. She was a member of the Columbus Circle of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Ohio. Dorothy was also a lover of poetry and her children published a collection of her work after her passing.

Two-piece long evening dress. Light blue silk chiffon with beige velvet burnout pattern. a) Tunic style top with bateau neckline, back with slit and three self-covered buttons closure. Long dolman sleeves gathered wrist to elbow terminating in short zippers at wrist. Bodice gathered either side under the dolman sleeve creating a rounded bottom; lined with beige chiffon. b) Long straight skirt. Elastic waist band. Five 11.5" tucks at center back releasing to create back fullness. Lined in a double layer of beige silk chiffon with back slit; lining layers stitched together at slit to act as one layer.

An account of the resource
Dress: silk crepe with two prints. Upper bodice, sleeves and skirt ruffle are in black with dots, pink and red tulips. Lower bodice and upper bodice panel are gathered at center front to form 'V' neckline and opening above chest front. Self rosette at center. Lower bodice has curve over each breast, coming to center 'V'. Bodice is shirred, has five small raised pink silk flowers. Back bodice also has two parts. Upper back bodice has 'V' neck with one hook/eye opening and self bow. Bow fastens on left with snaps. Lower back bodice shirred at center, zipped opening. Sleeves are set-in with a pleated puff at cap, horizontal seam at elbow, forming upper and lower sleeves. Uppersleeves has two pleats at elbow. Lower sleeve has zipper opening. Front skirt is a two-gore, circular style, very flared with ruffle sewn all around skirt with a seam that form arches. Stitching line accented with black soutache. Back skirt has four gores, very flared. Bodice is lined with black China silk.

This dress was worn by Mrs. Frank (Isabel) Eberstadt. Isabel was the daughter of poet Ogden Nash. Born in 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland, she later married Frederick Eberstadt. Frederick was a well-known photographer and style-setter in New York City. They were key figures in the New York social scene in the 1960s and 70s. Isabel was a graduate of Bryn Mawr and a published writer.
