Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
This suit was worn by Margaret Jacob Dombey who purchased it in the summer of 1947 at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco while on vacation with her family. Margaret Barbara Jacob was born in 1906 to Anna and George Jacob in Columbus, Ohio. George was a retail merchant and later owned a dry cleaning business. Margaret was considered one of the most beautiful women in town throughout her life, always dressing stylishly. Her pictures were often in the local paper. While a student at Ohio State, Margaret was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and elected by popular vote as both a Rosebud and a May Queen. After graduating in 1927, she married Alexander Dombey in 1934. Alexander was a graduate of Ohio State College of Law and practiced in Columbus.
