Description
An account of the resource
“Sportswear” at the end of the nineteenth century was a term applied only to clothing designed for athletic purposes, the playing of sports popular at the time including tennis, golf, bicycling, bathing (what we now call swimming), ice-skating, yachting, and hunting. Later, in the early twentieth century, it became associated with spectators at sports events and then expanded to include simple, tailored clothing which preserved the informal qualities of athletic attire. Post WWII, sportswear became synonymous with casual wear worn at any time of the day, and is considered a uniquely American contribution to the fashion industry.<br /><br /><span>This exhibition, primarily of clothing from the late 19</span>th<span> century through the 21</span>st<span> century, explores the intersection of sports and fashion and how each influenced the other over the past 150 years. Full skirted bathing costumes and gym suits of the late 19</span>th<span> century reflect the fashion of their time, but evolved into more streamlined functional forms as women became more active in the early 20</span>th<span> century and beyond. When evening gowns of the 1930s had low back necklines, swimsuits had to follow suit, or was it the other way around? Was it the low-back swimsuits that influenced the low-back evening dresses?</span>

Physical Object
An inanimate, three-dimensional object or substance. Note that digital representations of, or surrogates for, these objects should use Moving Image, Still Image, Text or one of the other types.
Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
Swimsuit was donated by Katie Antal, who was a member of the Ohio State University swim team from 2014-2018.
Arena is the manufacturer of the suit and posted this press release related to their suits on their website in 2018.
"In 2012, arena introduced a new term into the realm of contemporary swimming – Intelligent Compression. Using the company’s breakthrough technology, not only is compression of the swimmer’s muscles optimized, it kicks in when and where it is needed.
The secret behind this revolutionary concept is carbon fibre, with its intrinsic strength and stiffness, and highly favourable strength-to-weight ratio. By incorporating a carbon fibre cage into the weave of the swimsuit, the fibres lock down like a seatbelt as critical stretch levels kick in, giving maximum compression on over-extended zones, increasing support and control when and where it’s needed. At the same time, the stretch fabric retains its elasticity, remaining comfortable without affecting freedom of movement. For the swimmer, the result is a reduction in drag, improved efficiency, and an increase in power at the very moment they are drawing on the extreme reserves of their body’s energy.
Moreover, the strength of the carbon fibers also improves the suit’s surface integrity, which means there is less chance of tearing or damage that can result from extreme stretching when putting the suit on.
Intelligent Compression was a watershed in racing swimwear technology, and marked the birth of a legacy. In four short years, arena’s Powerskin carbon series of racing swimsuits has grown to include five leading-edge options: Carbon-Pro, Carbon-Flex, Carbon-Flex WCE, Carbon-Air, and in 2016, The Carbon-Ultra."
