This ensemble was donated by Carolyn Jeffers and likely belonged to Helen Peters Angell. Helen was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1910 to Marie Williams and Homer Peters. The skirt was produced by the Jack Tar Togs Company. Jack Tar Togs was founded in 1916 and produced sport ensembles for women and children. The company was known for their slogan, "Rub 'Em, Tub 'Em, Scrub 'Em, They Come Up Smiling." This slogan can be found on the garment label. Their popular ad campaigns were written by humorist, Irvin S. Cobb in the 1920s. In 1922, a promotion in the Saturday Evening Post labeled the brand, "Clothes that made young American free."

Provenance
The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.
Swimsuit was donated by Katie Antal, who was a member of the Ohio State University swim team from 2014-2018.
Arena is the manufacturer of the suit and posted this press release related to their suits on their website in 2018.
"In 2012, arena introduced a new term into the realm of contemporary swimming – Intelligent Compression. Using the company’s breakthrough technology, not only is compression of the swimmer’s muscles optimized, it kicks in when and where it is needed.
The secret behind this revolutionary concept is carbon fibre, with its intrinsic strength and stiffness, and highly favourable strength-to-weight ratio. By incorporating a carbon fibre cage into the weave of the swimsuit, the fibres lock down like a seatbelt as critical stretch levels kick in, giving maximum compression on over-extended zones, increasing support and control when and where it’s needed. At the same time, the stretch fabric retains its elasticity, remaining comfortable without affecting freedom of movement. For the swimmer, the result is a reduction in drag, improved efficiency, and an increase in power at the very moment they are drawing on the extreme reserves of their body’s energy.
Moreover, the strength of the carbon fibers also improves the suit’s surface integrity, which means there is less chance of tearing or damage that can result from extreme stretching when putting the suit on.
Intelligent Compression was a watershed in racing swimwear technology, and marked the birth of a legacy. In four short years, arena’s Powerskin carbon series of racing swimsuits has grown to include five leading-edge options: Carbon-Pro, Carbon-Flex, Carbon-Flex WCE, Carbon-Air, and in 2016, The Carbon-Ultra."
