Designer

Burrows, Stephen

Stephen Burrows was born in New Jersey in 1943. He is most known for his use of stretch fabrics, creating soft and stretchy garments that were intended to be worn without any undergarments. He often finished his hems withzig zag edging, usually in red thread. While initially a mistake, this creates a curling hem or “lettuce effect” that has become his signature. In 1973, Burrows was one of the five American designers, and only African-American designer, invited to participate in the “Battle of Versailles” fashion show, a spectacular competition between American and French designers .Also in 1973, Burrows became the first Black designer to win a Coty award, and subsequently won the award again in 1974 and 1977.
