Frederick was born in Troy, Ohio on July 8, 1913 to Edna Herr and Vernon LeFevre. Frederick was the younger of two sons born to Vernon and Edna. His father, Vernon, worked as a bank teller/cashier. Frederick enrolled at Ohio State University in 1931 and was a pledge for Pi Kappa Alpha in 1932.
