Mary McCormick

IMG_3072.JPG

The child of Irish immigrants, Mary McCormick was born in Canada in the early 1850s. Following her initial immigration to the United States in 1888, she lived the bulk of the first half of her life in Cincinnati, OH, working as a dressmaker. The latter half of her life was spent in Cuyahoga, OH.

She was most notorious for her work with Rose Lazarus, born in Cincinnati in 1861, who was the wife of Fred Lazarus. He co-owned the F & R Lazarus & Co. Department Store, Columbus, OH. Rose, herself, was President of the Temple Israel Sisterhood for 25 years, as well as the Director of the District Nursing Association. The dress within our collection was gifted by Mrs. Chester Rose Shinbach, the granddaughter of Rose Lazarus.
